Annemarie's uncle meant that, if you know nothing, you can't really give away the truth because you don't know the truth! So literally you can't confess or give up on the secret, if you don't even know it. You'll be a lot braver if you know nothing because whenever the person tries to push information out of you, they simply can't. You would have no information, so they would eventually give up. However, if you have any information, you might buckle under the pressure and reveal the secret.
    That's what I thought. Yeah!

What her uncle meant was that the less she knows the better it would be if she gave clues but it still would end in chaos.I also agree with Cassidy because the truth is the only key to terrible things and if she knows everything and gets under pressure and spills the beans then she would have revealed the secret and her family would pay the price like her mom did when she wanted to open the casket after her lie about how the body could have been diseased and thats when she was slapped by a German Soldier but that would have been a minor punishment compared to what would happen if they found out that it was a lie.Chapter 10.

    Oh and Happy B-day Cassidy!

Her uncle meant that it's better for her to know less about the truth because the less you know the safer she will be so she doesn't say anything to alarm the soldiers. A lot of times, people try to trick you into telling them secrets, but if you don't know the truth, there's no way to let it out. Although, if Annemarie knew more, I think that she would tell the soldiers things they didn't need to know because of all the pressure she's in.

Uncle Henrik meant if you don't know what's happening then you will just go with the flow. And also if the solider saw her look at her Uncle they might know she was trying to hide something. He said this saying to her on chapter 6 or 5.

Well, I think Uncle Henrik meant that it's best not to because she wouldn't be scared of what could happen to Ellen. Having this knowledge could prevent Annemarie from sleeping at night. She could be scared of the soldiers and not be able to stand up to them. Uncle Henrik didn't want to lie to her so he told her, otherwise he wouldn't have for her safety. Also the soldiers could find out she's hiding something and ruin the plan.

I think he meant that it's better if she doesn't know a lot about it so then she would be safer if the Nazis asked her questions. If she knew about it a lot during the time that she had to lie, she might get to scared and tell the truth because she knows she is lying. Since she didn't know the whole truth then she just had to go along with what the family said.

I think he meant if she didn't know much about what was happening. Because if she did know a lot the soldiers would ask her questions and little aren't good liars. So if she didn't know what was happening it would be easier to answer the soldier's questions. So in that case it would be safe for her.

I think the uncle said "To be brave came more easily if you knew nothing" because knowing the truth can sometimes be scary and make it much harder to be brave. Being brave doesn't mean without fear but instead in spite of ones fear so if you have less fear from not knowing the truth it is easier to be brave. With no fear or very little fear makes it much less possible for the person to be reluctant of braveness. Uncle Henrik is wise and knew this so he shared his wisdom with Annemarie. He stayed strong in his decision to keep the truth from Annemarie and that choice just might have saved their life when the soldiers came to his barn.
