I think the funeral is actually just a disguise for Ellen. So, when Annemarie leaves the beach, they could put Ellen inside the coffin. That way, when the soldiers inspect them, all they will find is an innocent family and a coffin. Besides, on page 53, Papa told Uncle Henrick that they were sending him a pack of cigarettes. The pack of cigarettes was Ellen. The family could use the same trick again and maybe fool the solders again too.
    That's what I thought.

I think that the funeral was just a disguise so that they could sneek ellen to whereever they want to sneek her. i also thnk that they might take ellen to there uncles boat just like the box of cigaretts.Well that is at least what i thought.

The "funeral" was just an excuse for Annemarie's friend, Ellen. They did this so when the soldiers come to inspect them, all they'll find is a regular family and a coffin. After the inspection, Ellen can reunite with her parents. As Cassidy and Roy said, on pg. 53 they were going to send a box of cigarettes to Uncle Henrik for a little treat. This is why I think what the coffin is for.

I think the "real" reason for the funeral was to get Ellen's family over to Annamarie's house without questions by the soldiers. On pg.53 it said that they were going to send a box of cigarettes. Ellen was the pack of cigarettes. This gave me a little hint of what the funeral was about.

I agree with Eric that the entire funeral was just an excuse to have a lot of people in one house at the same time without soldiers questioning them. Fortunately for Annemarie and her family it worked. Sure the mother got hit by a soldier it saved an entire group of innocent Jews. The casket ended up holding old clothes that would keep the Jews safe on the ride to denmark. -Nic

I believe that the funeral was also an excuse. As everyone has said, the real reason was to get Ellen and her family past the soldiers without questions. The pack of cigarettes was code for Ellen as stated on page 53.

I think the real reason for the coffin was to sen blankets, jackets, and the secret package. The secret package is very important. It must be something to help Ellen's family. They are also trying to fool the soldiers again like they did when Papa talked to Uncle Henrik over the phone.pg. 53 Besides they fooled them once they can fool them again. Also they could easily sneak a person in there for a trick.

I agree with Michael that it was an excuse to have a funeral for a fakr person but it had many lies tied up withit also like the body had a disease later on chapter 10 but it did have a pack of cigarettes which was a code on pg. 53 but it had other things too. That coffin could help out the family or destroy it.
